Umag used to be an island. It was first time mentioned in 7th century. Before Umag there was a small town Sipar. It was destroyed in 9th century and that Umag divided and started to develope. In 8th century Franks dominated in Umag, but in 1269. Umag got under Venetian rule. In 1370. Umag was destructed by Genova. After the fall of Venetia and Napoleon, Austrians dominated in Umag. Umag was developing in that time until the World War I, when Italy and later Germans occupied it. In 1954.
